Activate HashiCorp Flex

This topic describes how to activate HashiCorp Flex for an Essentials, Standard, or Premium plan HCP Terraform organization.

Overview

Organizations with predictable infrastructure needs can sign up for a HashiCorp Flex billing plan. Flex plans optimize costs through annual commitments. Refer to HashiCorp Flex for more information.

Complete the follwing steps to active your Flex plan:

1. Create an HCP Terraform user account and either link it your existing HCP user account or create a new HCP account.
2. Provision teams and roles to safeguard your Flex balance.
3. Activate your Flex contract in HCP.
4. Verify that credits have been allocated to your Flex account.

After activating your account, you can edit your plan to make any necessary adjustments, such as changing the account owner responsible for billing.

Requirements

To activate HashiCorp Flex, you must:

• Create a HashiCorp Cloud Platform (HCP) organization. Refer to Create an organization in the HCP documentation for instructions.
• Be a member of your HCP Terraform organization's owners team
• Have the admin or owner role in your HCP organization. Refer to Access Management in the HCP documentation for more information.

Create user accounts

If you already use both HCP Terraform and HCP, you can create an HCP Terraform account linked to an HCP user account. Otherwise, create separate HCP Terraform and HCP accounts.

Create a linked HCP user account

Complete the following steps to create a linked account:

1. Go to HCP Terraform and click Continue with HCP account.
2. Create a free HCP account or sign in using your HCP email. If you have an existing HCP Terraform account, HCP prompts you to link it. If you do not have an HCP Terraform account, HCP creates one for you and links it to the HCP account.

Create separate HCP Terraform and HCP user accounts

1. Go to HCP Terraform and create a free account or sign in to your existing account.
2. Go to HashiCorp Cloud Platform and create a free HCP account or sign in to your existing account.

Provision required roles

Organization members may be owners or admins in either the HCP Terraform or HCP organization, but not both. To safeguard your Flex balance, determine whether to invite HCP Terraform organization owners to the HCP organization, or HCP admins to HCP Terraform.

Consider the following scenarios when deciding which approach is right for your organization. In both scenarios, the HashiCorp Cloud Platform admin manages the billing relationship:

After you create your user accounts:

1. Become an HCP Terraform organization owner: An HCP Terraform organization owner must invite you to the owners team. You must be an owner to access the Plan & Billing page in the HCP Terraform organization settings.
2. Become an HCP admin: An HCP admin or organization owner must invite you to the HCP organization that HashiCorp Flex is allocated to and grant you the admin role.

Activate your Flex plan

To use a Flex plan for an HCP organization, you must self-activate a Flex contract. Follow the Flex contract activation steps to activate the Flex plan for your HCP organization.

Verify HashiCorp Flex balance allocation

Complete the following steps to verify your Flex balance:

1. Navigate to HCP Org > Billing.
2. Verify that the page displays a Contract Summary with an available balance.

If the page only shows your credit card information or a $500 free trial credit, your HashiCorp Flex account may be scheduled to be allocated at a future date. Contact your HashiCorp Sales Account Manager for more information.

All new HashiCorp organizations are automatically allocated $500 in trial credits. If your HashiCorp Flex account is not yet allocated, you can use the trial credits to temporarily activate an Essentials plan for your HCP Terraform organization and immediately access paid features such as team management or more concurrency.

Edit the HCP Terraform organization plan

Complete the following steps to edit your organization plan:

1. Navigate to your HCP Terraform organization's Settings > Plan & Billing page.

2. If your HCP Terraform user account is not managed by HCP, log in to an HCP account that has the admin role in the HCP organization with HashiCorp Flex allocated. If you have a linked HCP account, you do not need to log in and HCP Terraform automatically identifies HCP organizations that your linked HCP user account is a member of.

3. Click Edit Plan to go to the Plan Activation page.

4. If your HashiCorp user account has the owner or admin role in multiple HCP organizations, select a billing account.

5. Select a plan and confirm your selection.

6. Review the Cost Estimate.

If you meet all the necessary requirements, the Plan Selection page shows HashiCorp Flex. If you see Pay-as-you-go, review the previous steps or contact HashiCorp support for assistance.
