Deploy and manage applications in Terraform Developer Portal
A Terraform Developer Portal application is a deployed template. Each application has its own HCP Terraform workspace that manages the template's no-code module, so application developers can create, update, and delete standardized infrastructure without writing Terraform configuration. Refer to Create and manage templates to set up templates.
Prerequisites
- An HCP Terraform organization on the Standard edition or higher to use HCP Terraform no-code modules and the private module registry. Refer to HCP Terraform pricing for plan details.
- An account in your HCP Terraform organization with permission to create workspaces.
- A Terraform Developer Portal template to deploy. Refer to Create and manage templates for more information.
Create an application
To create an application, complete the following steps:
- Sign in to HCP Terraform and select the organization where you want to create your application.
- In the navigation menu, click Developer Portal.
- Click Applications in the sidebar, then click New Application.
- Choose the template you want to use to create your application.
- Click Next.
- Configure the settings for your new application, including the application Name and Terraform project. If you configured your template to let users provide values for the input variables, HCP Terraform includes inputs for each variable.
- Click Create application.
- HCP Terraform shows the application overview page. Use this page to monitor the status of application deployment progress and read through the developer instructions.
Update an application
When you update the version of a no-code module that a template uses, each application deployed from that template displays an update notification. HCP Terraform does not update applications automatically. The application owner must respond to the notification. HCP Terraform prompts for values for any new input variables. Refer to Design no-code ready modules for more information.
If the new module version adds an input variable, update the template settings first. Provide a default value or allow application developers to supply a value when they deploy the template.
To update an application when a module version is available, complete the following steps:
- Sign in to HCP Terraform and select the organization where you want to update your application.
- In the navigation menu, click Developer Portal.
- Click Applications in the sidebar, then click the name of the application to update.
- Click View update.
- Enter values for any new input variables.
- Click Save configuration & start plan.
- Click Go to run details.
- Review the plan output, then click Confirm & apply to apply the update.
When you apply the update, Terraform Developer Portal automatically starts a plan run in HCP Terraform. If the plan completes successfully, HCP Terraform automatically starts an apply run to update the workspace.
Delete an application
Deleting an application removes the HCP Terraform workspace and resources associated with the application.
To delete an application, complete the following steps:
- Sign in to HCP Terraform and select the organization where you want to delete your application.
- In the navigation menu, click Developer Portal.
- Click Applications in the sidebar, then click the application you want to delete.
- Click the Manage menu and select Delete.
- In the dialog, enter "delete" and click Delete.
